After working in retail for almost 10 years, let's just say that I'm not anxious to get out and shop on Black Friday. I feel for the people who had to work today. I've worked plenty of Black Fridays. I remember my first one at Ames when I was 17 years old. I woke up late and luckily I lived just five minutes away. I got there right at 6am and rang register for at least 6 hours before I even got a break. Christopher, a former Ames employee, came to visit me that day while I rang register endlessly. Parents fought over stupid toys for their kids and treated me rudely when something didn't ring up correctly. It truly made me hate Black Friday for years to come. At least at Ames it was busy so the time went fast. When I started working at Officemax it was stupid. It was busy, but there were always technical problems that froze the registers or rebate slips wouldn't print out. What a waste of time! I always felt bad for the recipients of the gifts some people would buy at Officemax. Black Friday at Omax got lamer and lamer each year. The one year was fun because Nicole and I worked a split shift and in between our shifts we went and got Denny's with the other cool people who worked there like Mike Pasela, Matt Hartzell, and Matt Hlavacek. It was a fun time! The only other holiday I enjoyed working was Thanksgiving at Ames. That was fun! I got time and a half and one of the sweet "moms" at Ames would make the managers a Turkey dinner so they could have something good to eat. I always volunteered to work Thanksgiving.
So when I go out on Black Friday or if I go out on Black Friday I make sure to be extra kind to those working. Remember, they have probably been driven crazy!
Today was a busy work day around the house. My shredder was pretty tired after I shredded tons of old paperwork and organized some things around the house. We ended the day by decorating the Christmas tree. Tomorrow is time to put the Victorian Village up!
